UBC Botanical gardens
I am so happy to be able to let you share this glorious walk through the UBC botanical garden this May 2009 in Vancouver. The display of Rhododendrons was truly unique and compliments the Rodo show in Burnaby. Good thing to do in same two weeks. Many of the Rodos I was told were given by a collectors estate. As they have a very shallow root system they are easy to transplant. There is a new CANOPY WALK that we need to do next time .. There are BALD EAGLES nesting in a few trees . Look closely on one of the pictures you can see one sitting up there. I would have needed a 400mm zoom minimum to get closer :-) Here is a link Bald Eagles in case you haven't seen one close up

The rest of this garden is filled with unusual plants from big to small worth discovering. I loved the utmost orange velvet of the back of a giant Rodo leaf and some of the tiny tiny moss likes plants. The Szechuan Rodo that has such an amazing hue of blue that for reasons I don't know respondet so strongly to flash...so the shots aren't to great and our time was limited. A VERY romantic setting to pose under the near perfect arch but in quite a shady corner. We discovered also a very pretty chinsese tree in flower ... ( don't ask me the name ..sorry) but the petals are more intricate than cherry blossoms and hangs like litle bells in white and pink A DO RA BLE !
It was great to walk these grounds with our Friends Teresa and Denis UBC members. She is very knowledgeable in plants and told us on the spot about any plants the Latin name and explain the why and how of the plant, and this without reading the Name Tags the the laymen like me will find. I think it would be nice if more plants tags would tell us more than just the name First time I saw artificial pollination. The pictures of the flowers of the bush in aerated plastic bags! Some stunning ferns, in full growth. Beautiful trained apple trees, the pinkest of all Japanese maples I have ever seen in my life. A simple but very pretty pond with mini water lilies looking like floating coins surrounded by several simulated micro climats from Asia and other area of the world. A flat law maze at the feet of a very detailed wire Minotaur. For the ones who want to know more go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minotaur .....
A so pretty and a veggie patch that should be everyone envy in this world going green.. but I must tout that ours has more growing at this time.. They tunnels in under a road taking one from the forested area to the more formal area. Beside one single high rise on the grounds of the university this place seems far from town it is located along the Marine Drive and only +- 300m from the coast.,. There is a lovely souvenir shop and a nursery that has a ONCE a year perennial sale that was yesterday. This sale has a huge attendance that we avoided on purpose yesterday for the sake of saving and avoiding the gardens to be super crowded. But the high stacks of seedling trays in the carpark tell that the sale must have been very good. Bravo UBC and thank you for this great garden. Definitely a must for anyone discovering Vancouver. I wish I had come earlier.
For those who want to know more I invite you to go to http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/ and even maybe join the very helpful and informative group of members of its Forum.
I welcome any of their members to kindly put comments and names or links to the plants that I have photographed as I am NOT knowledgeable in the naming them .. I then can put it in the captions.
Thanks in advance for those who will.
