Johannesburg Greenside area, WESTCLIFF and SAXON hotel
If you are in Johannesburg soon or plan a trip for 2010 or later I a sure the area called Greeside will still be "IN" it boosts many trendy restaurantsm, shops, boutiques etc. I was very much in awe at Hoy Poloy Staff is very friendly everywhere you go. Than why not either stay at or visit for a meal or cake and coffee or even late night drinks the "Westlciff Hotel" http://www.westcliff.co.za/web/ojnb/ojnb_a2a_home.jsp or the utmost stylish "Saxon Hotel" in Sandhurst http://www.saxon.co.za/ Interior design by Stephen Falcke http://www.stephenfalcke.com/main.html You can see some of his other show stands in my South African Interior Gallery.
Make some sort of prior booking at the Saxon as they are very, lets say reclusive and above scrutiny. I had the pleasure to visit it. I asked and was shown everything up to the presidential suite that was to be occupied by 'President Mandela" that same evening and the hotel was closed to the public for a private function. The Designer who won the worlds distinguished BEST INTERIOR DESIGN AWARD with his work where repetition and and overload and "Nouvau Afrique?mingles with " Nouvelle Cuisine" I must say I was surprised at the bath tabs in the Presidential suite being on the entrance side of the tub and the as Uniform Designer for many Deluxe Hotels I thought the uniforms where lets say even I agree the to the sort of Zen look but the cut and finish was far from the price tag of a not so average price per night in any of the rooms of this hotel. Note it was the private residence of a well off lets call it agricultural landowner. The now dining room was his indoor swimming pool etc..
I loved the papier mache animals replacing taxidermy and the mix of earthly and natural textures.Since then the Hotel has been host to many if the rich and famous visiting Johannesburg incognito or insist on total privacy which is impossilbe at the Michel Angelo 5 star hotel at Santon Square. The saxon Hotel is behind tall walls in a private park. The Westcliff boosts the I must say the best view over Johannesburg and is only topped by some private estate that is owned I am told by the owners of De Beers Diamond mining industry and a boys school. The whole project was actually a flop of a townhouse development complex that was a few years to early or too expensive. Now town housing is the preferred lifestyle for many in JHB. The hotel group who bought the concept turned all the town houses into rooms in a clever way preserving the villa attitude the also own the Mount Nelson 5 star Hotel in Cape Town there are quite some similarities in the inside decor of the rooms who boost TV raising from cabinetry at the foot of the bed etc. There are minibuses that shuttle clients up and down the mountain every five minutes should the steep walk be too much for you to handle. Definitive a place to plash out go for a lunch by the pool or a dinner at the restaurant that I find very "kitch" with its white wrought iron chairs or hang out at the "Polo club" and mingle with some of the local wealthy crowd spending their cash away from the public eye. This Polo club not to be mistaken with the one at the Beverly Hills hotel in Los Angeles that caters for the very very wealthy crowd in Beverly Hills that you can find on my Uniform Design Resume on my other webpage.
