World Rose Festival 2009 New Vancouver Convention Center
World Rose Festival 2009 was a partial (if not entire) disappointment . The entry fee of 22$ not only to my opinion was a ripoff. Newspapers did NOT mention that evening from 6-pm was 16$ only. And as the whole exhibit was totally indoors it would not have mattered. One was expecting some daylight for such a "natural" event.
Sadly lighting was much below average. No special consideration to the nature of the displays. Ever heard of spotlights, led lights, etc instead of vertical warehouse ceiling lights from 15m above ?? This is supposed to be the most green and latest model of an International standard Convention center, we felt transported back in time to some countryside school hall.
All was very dark NO daylight and the exhibits of numerous roses entering contest were so cramped and on poor choice back ground such as plane white or black paper or an awful glittery silver fabric.
Very few contestant showed creativity by displaying their pieces with a matching background. May I suggest that this should be a requirement for another show. I can't wait for the next show that will be in South Africa were Roses bloom 3 to 4 times per season and your average free flower show in a shopping mall displays 100x more creativity. To top this all some machine standing behind a curtain pumped some foggy smelly stuff , that seemed to come from a kitchen into the air that was very unpleasant and smelling, near the competitors display of small roses. This was a total let down. Naturally my compliments to the few professional florist exhibit standing out . Although the kitsch of the white veil drapes was difficult to comprehend. Velvety fabrics absorbing light, such as moire, taffeta, velvet jerseys that match the touch and feel of roses and feel rich with a "veloute" would have been so much more a match. Even in polyester if silk is not affordable. When one sees the immense work some stunning displays must have been like the "Perennial" flower beds that greeted one at the entrance were breathtaking, then the general organization of the show was of the poorest concept.
Vancouver is known for its Design oriented flair, who on earth signed off the Design of the general concept of this exhibition?
CONVENTION CENTER MANAGEMENT:
When coming out of the Rose show we wanted to view the much talked about green roof from the upper lobby. Already on the escalator up we were adresses if not (screamed or called at from the back) by a security guard as such . ' You come back down here you can't go up there. Ok go up and come back down the other escalator". We did not and walked the few yards to the glass wall to view the famous "green roof" with another couple who was already there.
A few minutes later the guard had come up and chased us down with words like " you are not allowed up here. We replied saying it is our taxes who paid for this and there is no sign that says NO access and all the escalators are active. He then conceded. I do not make the rules but if I was in your shoes I would think the same way.
Sweet man.
At the ground level then we saw others using the elevators to go up and followed and finally strolled freely and quitely on the upper lobby to admire the roof, the Designer outdoor Chandelier and view over Pacific place.
What a shame that for a Nature oriented Show the Green and Nature roof was not supposed to be seen or visited.
A big "Zero" for the so called "green" Convention center managment and organisation. Was the restriction because at the far wing some " dark suited congress" was sipping cocktails and mingeling facing the cruiseship view? May they have felt underpriviledged walking the same floors as Rose Festival local and overseas visitors ?
Enjoy the views of this otherwise exceptional building
