The Kale forest in our organic garden and much more

Since living in Vancouver I have come to grow our own organic veggies. Yes it was an Ellen D. on her show, where she grew a garden in the back of her studio that made me expand to make my own elevated beds for lettuce etc. We only get sunshine from around 9-10am till 2-3pm maximum depending the month. We are fully south facing and the land is on each side of the house. So here is our Kale forest three to 4 four some even 5 feet feet tall:-)l . This is the curly Kale, then there is red and blue Russian Kale and Italian Kale ..the one with the very long rough leaves They all taste delicious. Why our curly Kale is tall i think is because I grow it very close and it fights for the sunlight. I must admit it makes it much more comfortable to collect the leaves although I have seen them being much bigger and longer on plants that grow closer to the floor. But hey taller is less chance for snails to eat it before us. This year has been quite good very few aphids and snails. All this is grown from seed. I tried a wall of corn but it was not a success they did not pass the three feet and somehow maybe there was no pollination. In the following you will find all sorts of pics what can grown in town in Vancouver. The fine pretty flowers are of a lettuce I love. They are utmost delicate. The cherry tomatoes grew very well in 2009 in 2010 I tried big tree tomatoes it was a disaster too much rain and humidity even with a plastic roof they rotted all away on the stem, even those removed to dry away in house rotted from within. I also grow green and multicolored Swiss chard that does quite well. I start them in one bed or in the elevated ones and then move them to the floor bed when big enough by taking a big root ball in one go and replant it and this works well. The raspberries are all home grown a real delight. A gift from neighbors and friends. Just from a few branches we got at least 8 bowls in the first season and 4 bowls for the late season ryping one. There I learned from friends that there are two types the ones for middle end summer and the ones for September - October. Will add more photos as they grow. This year I ripped out the last plants after the last harvest in January and left the stems there and they still made tiny leaves during the winter even just lying there out of the earth amazing. Since I started this gallery I have added many elevated beds in cedar wood boxes on wrought iron legs IDEAL the slugs hate climbing on metal. I guess it tastes the same as if we were liking our ski poles as kids..not delicious.:-) Since the first year several have come and gone. These pics are not dated but as you can see most are in the same beds I add quality soil/dirt every year. I don't like the word dirt for soil as it nourishes us and dirt is not a nice word for such a good thing. We grow tomatoes when we can very nice up to 2.5m tall although this year was terrible nothing only rot. But the lettuce did very well and thee kale was very good in 2011 also.
